James Acklin Sr.

• Veteran: U.S. Air Force

Major Acklin Sr. served the country for 15 years. On Sept. 28, 1987, while practicing a low-level bombing run at 600 feet, a B-1B bomber struck a bird. Three crew members parachuted to safety, but three others died. The crash was the first of a B-1, other than a prototype. At the time of the accident, Major Acklin was one of the most experienced B-1B pilots. James was the grandfather of Lucy Acklin, BCHS Class of 2025.

Kevin Alerding

Kevin is the son of Diane Miller Schmidt, BCHS Class of 1965. Kevin provided Army personnel with information about law, in and out of court. He also wrote wills for soldiers being deployed. Kevin retired from the Army obtaining the rank of major after 20 years of service.

Michael Alerding

2nd Lieutenant Michael Alerding served with the US Marines in Jacksonville, NC. A recent PU graduate and new husband, he was in charge of provisions for his men. Michael is the grandson of Diane Miller Schmidt, BCHS Class of 1965. He had obtained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

Amelia Andretti

Amelia Andretti, 2LT, just graduated as Officer from the University of Tampa and is beginning her service in Washington.

She is the cousin of current BCHS student Dylan and daughter of the late John Andretti.

Col. Dennis Baltimore

• Active Duty: U. S. Army

Col. Baltimore is the cousin of Paula Corley, BCHS Class of 1981, and has served the country for 29 years. He served as the Disbursing Officer of the 138th Finance Battalion in Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo in 2005. As Deputy S1 of the 219th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade in Talil Air Base, Iraq 2011, his unit was awarded the Army Superior Unit Award. He was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Kosovo Campaign Medal with Bronze Star.

Sgt. Jesse Baltimore

Sgt. Jesse Baltimore is proudly serving our Country in the US Army stationed in Hawaii with his wife Alexis and three year old daughter, Remeigh. During his tenure, he has previously served in Kuwait. Jesse is a cousin of BCHS Graduate Paula Corley, ’81.

Marc Brickley

Marc was a Master Sergeant in the Air Force Special Ops.

He is the godfather of Julianne Brickley ’27.

Christine Brosius

• BCHS Class of 1988

Christine retired from the Army in 2011, after serving 22 years. She served all over the world to include 4 deployments oversees at varied locations. She held the rank of First Sergeant at retirement. She loved the Army, saying it wasn’t easy but the reward of seeing soldiers growth and mission success made it worthwhile.

Richard Buchanna

Richard served in the Army for 25 years. He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War, serving 2 tours. He obtained the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4. Richard is the grandfather of current BCHS student Parker Hellyer, Class of 2025.

ED Buer

• Veteran: U. S. Army

Ed served in the U.S. Army, from 1969-1971. He obtained the rank of Lieutenant. He was stationed at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, and served as registrar for the U.S. Army Finance School. He is the grandfather of current BCHS student Drew VanVleet.

Brent Douglas Calvert

Brent served our country from 1966-1968 as a communications director stationed in Korea. He guarded the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone). He earned the rank of E5 Sergeant. Brent is the grandfather of BCHS alumnus, Cooper Berry, Class of 2022.

Angelo Carnaghi

Angelo was a 2nd Lieutenant/Co. CDR in the 45th Infantry, Philippines Scout, during WW II. He is the grandfather of Jackie Carnaghi, Class of 2015.

Joe served our country in the U.S. Army for 2 years. He also coached at BCHS.

Wilbur Clippinger

• Veteran, U.S. Air Force

Wilbur Michael Clippinger served in the U.S. Air Force from 1962-1966 as Airman First Class. He completed an intensive Russian language school at Syracuse University and, after orientation, served in a role in the USAF Security Service, gaining Top Secret Crypto clearance. He also served in communications intelligence reporting to NSA. Due to over training of Russian language personnel, he was reassigned to air postal unit in Paris, France for his final year of service. Wilbur is the grandfather of Noah and Charlotte Dudik.

Matthew Collier

Matthew is currently serving as a Petty Officer, 2nd Class in the U.S. Navy, stationed aboard the USS San Juan. He has been serving our country for 5 years.

Joesph M. Conlon

• Veteran, U.S. Marine Corp
• BCHS Class of 1965

Joe served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1970-1975. He obtained the rank of 1st Lieutenant and is a Vietnam veteran. He was a helicopter pilot with the 3rd Marine Air Wing and served aboard the USS New Orleans, the USS Iwo Jima, and the USS Blue Ridge.

Averitte Corley

Corporal Averitte W. Corley proudly served as a United States Montford Point Marine, one of the 1st Black US Marines to serve during WWII in the Pacific. As Corporal, he was a proud recipient of a Congressional Gold Medal awarded to all of the 1st Black US Marines who served during WWII from Montford Point. His years of service are 1945 to 1947. Averitte is the father of Paula Corley, BCHS Class of 1981.

Ron Costello

Ron Costello served in the U. S. Marine Corp in the Vietnam War.

He is the father of BCHS graduates and has a granddaughter at BCHS who will graduate in 2028.

Shane Cullina

• Veteran, U.S. Army
• BCHS Class of 2005

CPT Shane Cullina, Class of 2005, graduated from Army ROTC at Purdue University in 2009 and served on active duty in the Medical Service Corps in the U.S. Army for 9 years, ending service in 2016. During his tenure, Shane was stationed at Fort Bliss, TX with the 1st Armored Division as well as at Fort Campbell, KY with the 101st Airborne Division. He completed one tour of duty to Afghanistan from 2012-13 with the 101st and ended his career as a company commander within MEDCOM at Fort Campbell. Since leaving the service, Shane has moved back home to Indianapolis with his family and currently works as a healthcare operations executive.

Steve Czuhajewski

• Veteran, U.S. Air Force

Steve served in World War II in the 830th Battalion, Company B, Aviation Engineers, obtaining the rank of Technician Five, Morse Code radio operator. He was stationed in England, France, Germany, Jefferson Barracks, Missouri; Boise, Idaho and Fort Dix, New Jersey during his service between 1939-1945. Steve is the great grandfather of current BCHS student Benjamin Lam, Class of 2025.

Timothy Davis

Tim served for 23 years, advancing to Chief Petty Officer, E7, in the U.S. Navy. He also worked with the Marines too. Tim is the father of BCHS student Isabel Davis.

Joseph D. Eble

Joseph served our country as a Helicopter Pilot in the Army, CW5. He retired after 24 years in the service, but still helps others in his current work as a Medvac pilot. Joseph is the father of current BCHS student Michael Eble, Class of 2025.

Frederick Eisele

Fredrick A. Eisele was a radarman on the USS Hyman in the U.S. Navy. He was a Chief Petty Officer 3rd Class from 1955-1957.

He is the grandfather of Emma Townsend, Class of 2025 and Max Townsend, ’27.

Kurt Eisgruber

Kurt was a U. S. Marine Corps Infantry Officer from 1988-1992 advancing to the rank of Captain. He served in Operation Desert Shield (August 2, 1990-January 17, 1991) and Operation Desert Storm (January 17, 1991-February 28, 1991). He is the father of BCHS alumni: Lucy, Josef and Oskar.

Richard Eisgruber

Richard served our country in the U. S. Marine Corps from 1963-1966 advancing to the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

Brad Erdel

Major Brad “Chef” Erdel served 20 years in the United States Marine Corps, flying in the EA-6B Prowler community. He deployed five times to the Middle East in support of combat operations and was stationed across the United States and in Japan. He is most grateful for the Marines he served alongside and the unwavering support of his wife, Rachel, and daughter, Chloe.

Brad is the father of BCHS student Chloe Erdel, Class of 2029.

Alfred Michael ‘Mike’ Falcon

Mike was a Major in the Army with the Green Beret Special Forces, serving in Vietnam from 1966-1972. He is the grandfather of current student Davis Falcon, Class of 2023.

Mark R. Felts

Mark served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1962-1966. He is a recipient of the Purple Heart for being wounded in Vietnam.

Cynthia Craig Forbey

Cynthia Craig Forbey, U.S. Army, obtained the rank of SPC4, serving from 1986-91. She served as Combat Medic, Environmental Health Specialist and Licensed Practical Nurse and earned the Distinguished Honor Graduate 91C20 class. Cynthia is a Desert Storm Veteran, one of first 1000 women brought into line troops of 3rd Armored Calvary Regiment at Fort Bliss, Texas.

Brian o. Foy

Brian served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1983-2005, achieving the rank of Commander (0-5). The photo show CDR Foy swearing in his son, Connor Foy, 2nd Lt., into the U.S. Army National Guard on May 2019 at the U. of Oklahoma.

Michael Fulton

• Veteran, U.S. Army

After graduation from Wabash College, Michael served as an army accountant at NATO headquarters Belgium. He served on staff at the Army Financial Management School at Fort Jackson South Carolina, and oversaw travel operations in Baumholder, Germany. He deployed as part of the US operations during the Bosnian War. After a service related injury, he returned stateside where he served as an Auditor at the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS). He is currently the Deputy Director of Internal Audit serving the DoD.

Michael is the father of BCHS teacher, Sarah Fulton.

Captain David Gagermeier, veteran, is the grandfather of current student Ben Leising, Class of 2024.

Maryann W. Gaines

Maryann Gaines served our country in the U.S. Navy for 7 years. During that time, she earned the following: National Defense Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, NATO Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

After graduating from Bishop Chatard High School in 2004, Jeff served in the Marine Corps Infantry in 2nd Battalion 4th Marines for 4 years.

He served one deployment to Okinawa, Japan and one combat deployment to Haditha, Iraq from ’06-’07. After his final deployment, he served at Division Schools at Camp Pendleton, CA.

In 2008, he moved back to Indianapolis and curently teaches at Bishop Chatard. He also serves as the BCHS Military Family Liaison.

Zach Gillen

Zach Gillen served our country from 1995-2000, obtaining the rank of Lieutenant. He was a U.S. Naval Academy graduate and served as a Navy diver on USS ARCTIC and at EOD Group One

Joseph Guy served 11 years in the USMC, advancing to the rank of Staff Sergeant.

He was awarded Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon (Global War on Terrorism), and Meritorious Combat Corporal Promotion.

He was also recognized for National Defense (Operation Iraqi Freedom), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and Sea Services Deployment Medal. Joseph accumulated 20 months in a combat zone, serving in key operational roles from 2003-2005.

Joseph is married to Amy Guy, BCHS Class of ’93, and father of Colin Guy, ’24 and Madison Guy, ’27.

Robert Hoyt

Mark Hutson

Sergeant Mark Hutson served as a mechanic in the U.S. Army from 2018-2023. He was stationed at Fort Hood, TX (now Fort Cavazos). He deployed to Iraq/Syria in 2019-2020 and Syria in 2021-2022. He returned to Indianapolis after his service.

CDR Johnson was Commander in the U.S. Navy from 1977-2002. He is a former BCHS Math teacher (2012-2019), now retired.

David L. Kaplan

Captain Kaplan served in the U. S. Army as an Infantry officer. He served in South Korea DMZ and in Bremerhaven, Germany. He served during the Vietnam War as an Infantry Company Commander and was awarded the Purple Heart. He also was Adjutant General Officer at Fort Sheridan, Illinois.. He served for 5 1/2 years, from 1965-1970.

David is the parent of BCHS alumni David M. ’89, Michael ’91 and Kathleen ’92. He is the grandparent of Sophia Kaplan, ’23, Jack Kaplan (who attended BCHS in 2025), and Henry Kaplan ’28.

Joe Kelley

Joe Kelley served as an electronic technician in the U.S. Air Force from 1974 through 1977, achieving the rank of Sergeant.

Janet Kelley

Janet Kelley served 20 years in the U.S. Army. She currently is retired and still works for the government in Washington D.C. She is the grandmother of alumna Corlind Mallory, Class of 2018, and current student, Lauren Mallory, Class of 2024.

Captain Sean Kennedy served 8 years in the United States Army. During his tenure, Sean deployed overseas in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with a Combat Support Hospital and Forward Surgical Team.

Matt Klein

Matt served our country in the US Navy from 1992-1996. As an AME3, he worked on the F14 Tomcats (Topgun) in the Persian Gulf during The Persian Gulf War and Operation Southern Watch.

Christopher Lucas obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant as a Signal Intelligence Analyst in the U.S. Army, assigned in South Korea . He also served four years as part of the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), and during that time was deployed to Northern Africa.

Bob was 1st Lieutenant Army Ranger & commanding officer in the 4th Infantry War Dog Detachment, Viet Nam. He is the father of BCHS alumni Pat ’90, Ryan ’93, and Maryjane ’97 and grandfather of current BCHS students Connor ’26 and prospective student Erin ’29.

Dan Nelson

Dan trained at Great Lakes NTC as a Navy Hospital Corpsman and served at Naval Hospital San Diego. He then served with the Marine Corps and was deployed to Saudi Arabia for Desert Storm.

Jack Nelson

Jack E. Nelson served 6 years in the U.S. Army from 1969-1975, advancing to the rank of E-5.

He is the grandparent of Sophia Kaplan ’24, Jack Kaplan, and Henry Kaplan ’28.

Donald Nester

Donald served in the Army as a Specialist E5, assigned to U.S. Army Strategic Communications Command (USA STRATCOM) from 1965-67. He is the parent of 4 BCHS alumni: Deborah Hillenburg Nester, Jeff Nester ’88, Kimberly Meyer Nester, Kelly Johnson Nester.

Colonel Brendan M. Noone, D.O.

Brendan received his undergraduate degree from St. Francis University and a Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) from Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. After completing his residency in family medicine, he joined the U.S. Air Force and has served as a flight medicine physician for over twenty-two years. Currently, he is stationed at Hickam Air Force Base in Honolulu. He is Chief of Aerospace Medicine Division, Office of the Command Surgeon, Headquarters Pacific Air Forces (PACAF). His responsibilities include oversight of all Air Force aerospace medicine clinics in the Indo-Pacific.

Henry Burch Nunley

H. Burch Nunley served in the Marine Corp for 6 years (E-5) and 24 years in the Air Force Reserves (E-7).

He is the father of 6 BCHS alumni (Ellen , Mary , Emily , Abby , Burch and John) and the grandfather of 4 BCHS students/alumni: Aidan and Riley Kramer, Addison Burcham ’27, and Janice Ansty

John Ogorek

John attended the U.S. Military Academy and was then with the 82nd Airborne Infantry division as a platoon leader, 1st Lieutenant, serving the country for 6 years by 2021.

He is the brother of Elizabeth Ogorek, BCHS Class of 2022.

Sargeant Christopher Michael Proffitt

• BCHS Class of 2009

Gunnery Sargeant Christopher Proffitt has 14 years of service in the Marine Corp. He is currently serving with 2nd Battalion 7th Marines Fox Company Forward deployed to South Pacific.

Thomas Pyrz

LTC (R) Thomas Pyrz served our country from 1971-1991. He was at the West Point Military Academy from 1967-71 and was with the U.S. Army Field Artillery/U.S. Army JAG Corps from 1971-1991.

He is the grandfather of Eleanor Pyrz, BCHS Class of 2028.

James Joseph Qualters

Joe served our country from 1950-1952, in the Korean War. He obtained the rank of Corporal. Joe is the grandfather of Ryan and Ellie Burchard, Class of 2025.

Brent Radtke

• BCHS Class of 2004

Brent joined the Marine Corps upon graduating from Butler University in 2008. While assigned to 2nd Intelligence Battalion at Camp Lejeune, NC, he served as a Section Leader, Plans Officer, and Company Executive Officer, achieving the rank of Captain after 4 years of service. Between military and civilian service, Brent spent five years overseas in support of the mission in Afghanistan. He currently resides in Dallas, TX, with his wife Torey.

Lieutenant Commander Beth Reed

Beth is a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy, serving as a Foreign Area Officer. She has 11 years of service.

Camille Richard

• Veteran, U.S. Army

Camille was on Active duty from 1974-76 with the 32nd Signal Battalion in Germany. She achieved the rank of Specialist 4/E4 and was awarded the National Defense Medal.

Camille is the step-mother of alumna Maryann Gaines (Richard), Class of 1990.

Paul Richard

Paul served in the Army in the 82nd Airborne Division: active duty from 1967-69 and active reserves from 1969-1973. He received the National Defense Service Medal and Parachute Badge. He attained the rank of Specialist 4/E4.

Paul is the father of BCHS Graduate Maryann Gaines (Richard), Class of 1990.

Tim Rushenberg

Timothy John Rushenberg served in the U.S. Air Force from 2003-2007. He obtained the rank of Captain (O-3) in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps. Tim is the father of John, ’23, Charlie ‘, 25, Maggie ’26 and Michael ’28.

Jerry Ryan

Jerry Ryan is a Vietnam Veteran, serving our country from 1967-1970.. He is the husband of Frances “Monaghan” Ryan ‘66 (deceased) and grandfather of Jack and Frank Ryan.

JOhn & Sylvia Scally

• Veterans, U.S. Army

John served for 10 years in the Army Special Forces Green Beret, including a tour in Vietnam as Captain. After that, he served for 12 years in the Department of Defense as a Tactical Safety Explosives Officer.

Sylvia served in the Army Nurse Corp for 25 years, obtaining the rank of Colonel.

The couple are grandparents to BCHS student Colton Heinzelman.

Lieutenant Colonel Trent Sandifur

Trent is a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army, serving our country for 27 years. He is the father of the following BCHS alumni and current students Addison Sandifur, Class of 2025, Josie Sandifur, Class of ’26, John Sandifur, Class of ’27 and Delaney Sandifur, Class of ’29.

David Schnieders

Dave served in the U.S. Navy Reserve as a Seaman First Class from 1969-1972.

He is the father of 4 BCHS graduates and grandparent of Molly Baldwin, Class of 2028.

Walter Setmeyer, Jr.

Walter served in the U.S. Army from 1968-1970.

He is the grandfather of current BCHS student Lucas Setmeyer.

Charles served our country in the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of SPC in his six years of service. He was with the 82nd and the 101st, with one deployment to Iraq with the 82nd.

Jeremiah Shine

Jeremiah served as a Platoon Leader in the Combined Action Group, in South Vietnam from 1968-1969. He was a Sergeant in the service and was awarded the Purple Heart and 2 Bronze Stars during his service.

He is the brother of Kevin Shine ’73 and Trish Shine Funk ’78.

EDMUND SMITH JR

Edmund Smith Jr is a U.S. Navy Vietnam Veteran. He served as a Petty Officer Second Class, earning the rank of E5 in 4 years of service. He was an aerial photo interpreter at Cubi Pt Naval Air Station, Philippines 1965 – 1967 and on the Aircraft Carrier Coral Sea in Vietnam 1967 – 1968.

Edmund is the grandfather of Eleanor Pyrz, Class of 2028.

Stephen Smith

Stephen was a Specialist 4th Class in the U.S. Army, serving from 1969-1970. He is the parent of a BCHS alumni and grandparent of 3 BCHS alumni and one current student.

Thomas Smith

Thomas served the country for 4 1/2 years, reaching the rank of 3rd Class Petty Officer. He served in Vietnam in 1971 with the squadron VS33 aboard aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga. He received the Vietnam Service Medal, Foreign Conflicts/Wartime Service Medal.

Thomas is the grandfather of Zachary Smith, Class of 2025 and Justin Smith, ’28.

William Sullivan

William Francis Sullivan served our country as a Master Sergeant in the U. S. Army. He served from 1940-1945 and earned a Bronze Star in World War II.

Thomas is the great grandfather of Macie and Lucas Thompson.

John served in the U.S. Air Force for 11 years, obtaining the rank of Captain. He is the grandfather of 2 current BCHS students, Elsie Rohan and Ashlie Rohan.

Major / 04 Adam Teach has served our country for 15.5 years in the U. S. Air Force. He is a Speciality-MC 130 Pilot.

Adam is the uncle of Claire Cohoat, BCHS Class of 2028.

LCDR/04 Cecily Claire Teach has served our country for 13.5 years in the U. S. Navy. She is a Speciality Medical Services Corps Officer.

Jerome was in the service from 1967-1971 and advanced to the rank of Sergeant E-4. Bill served the country for six years in the Navy. He is the father of current BCHS students, Phil and Sam Tuohy, both in the Class of 2024.

Michael Leo Tuttle has been serving in the U.S. Navy for 2 years.

Chris Valentine

Petty Officer 3rd class Christopher Valentine served 4 years in the US Navy as an Aviation Electronics Technician. He helped land airplanes on ships in Japan. He is the son-in-law of Diane Miller Schmidt, BCHS Class of 1965.

John was an electronics technician in the U.S. Navy, serving our country from 1974-1978.

Thomas Westhoff

Tom served in the U.S. Army for three years from 1968 to 1971. He was stationed in Munich, Germany with the 66th Military Intelligence Group, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Tom is the grandfather of Molly Faris, Class of 2027.

Don Wynk

Charles Young

Charles was the great uncle of BCHS graduate Abigail Apley, BCHS Class of 2023. Charles was awarded the Korean War purple heart and several other awards. He loved America and freedom.

Dennis Michael Young

Mike was a 3rd Petty Officer in the Navy, serving our country for 4 years. He is the grandfather of current BCHS student, Zachary Smith, Class of 2025.

Major Kevin Zander

• Active Duty, U. S. Army
• BCHS Class of 2010

Major Kevin Zander graduated from the US Military Academy in 2014. Following graduation, he served as an aeromedical evacuation officer in the 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade and 101st Combat Aviation Brigade with overseas assignments in the Republic of Korea, Afghanistan, and eastern Europe. He is currently stationed at West Point where he serves as an aeronautics instructor in the Military Academy’s Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering.
